The scene is the lounge of a detached,
suburban house. When Bill Smith is caught breaking in by Adrian
Smythe, he defends himself verbally so well that Adrian is forced to
listen to him. By the time Helen Smythe appears, Bill has created such
an impression that Adrian invites him to call in his accomplice, the
heavily pregnant Linda who has been acting as a lookout. Now, in a
friendly atmosphere, Adrian explains to to the would be housebreakers,
that the affluence they see around them is a mere facade as he and
Helen are living on credit and are slaves to their debts. Bill is
equally impressed and urges Linda to be absolutely honest with the
Smythes whereupon, she dubiously removes a cushion from her jumper.
Adrian and Helen are furious at this deception but when a car draws up
outside it seems that they have not been entirely honest for the true
owners of the property have returned unexpectedly from holiday.
Published by Samuel French Ltd. in 1981, it has
been a very popular festival play, played all over the world.
