Scene: a stage. A touring repertory company, in the last stages of its decline, give its first performance of a Melodrama. Unfortunately, the cast have not bothered to rehearse and appear with scripts in their hands. The prompter, aware of the situation and realising that some of the cast are hard of hearing, has moved out onto the stage. Confusion reigns, some of the cast not realising that they are performing to a live audience.
