Scene: A small room in Haggis Hall. Angus
McAverice is vetting his wife's accounts when her sister arrives
unexpectedly. He, fearful of the cost of feeding her , orders her to
be ejected until he discovers that she has brought a valuable necklace
for him to look after. While he is opening the family vault, the two
women confer and decide it is time to act against Angus's meaness.
They agree to knock him out on his return and finally discover what he
has been hoarding in the vault. Unfortunately, Angus has ommitted to
tell them that his forebears were too mean to pay for a stairway to
the vault.
