Synopsis: Dr. Glow, an altruistic and naive
young doctor, is perturbed to learn that his National Health Clinic
has been hired out to Dr. Boxclever, a private consultant. From
Boxclever's treatment of Mrs. Grimley-Cloned, we soon realise that he
is out to milk his patients of every penny they possess by prescribing
unnecessary treatments and selling them useless medicines at
outrageous prices. Dr. Glow, thought by his lovesick nurse to be
incorruptible, is persuaded by Boxclever to act the part of an eminent
specialist and so begins a slide into malpractice. Finally, he sinks
to blackmailing Boxclever, having discovered that he is using an alias
and is not a registered doctor, into a fifty-fifty share of his
ill-gotten gains. The denouement though, is not as straight forward as
it would appear, for, by another twist of the plot, all ends happily
with Glow realising the value of Nurse Bountiful's devotion, Boxclever
getting his just deserts and Mrs. Grimley-Cloned overcoming her
hypochondria. "Cut and Run" is an hilarious farce, painting
large the dangers inherent in private health care.
Uses a composite set, consisting of a small
waiting room, surgery(the main acting area)and a small dispensary.
